One simple move-in rule

Leaks, damaged connections or unusual shaking? Stop using the appliance and arrange qualified help. This sheet is a checklist, not an installation or repair manual.

For ordinary household laundry. Follow your exact appliance manual and garment and product labels. Flood-contaminated items, hazardous residues and illness-specific disinfection need separate guidance.

A practical first-week laundry checklist for new homeowners.

Six habits for your new laundry space

  1. Check before the first load.

Save the manuals. Look for worn hoses or leaks without moving appliances. If installation is uncertain, have a qualified professional check it before use.

Find the model numbers and the exact installation and care instructions. Ask the installer to confirm leveling, required shipping-hardware removal, water connections and drainage. An inherited appliance is not proof that its installation is correct. Do not move heavy appliances or alter gas, wiring or plumbing to follow this checklist.

  2. Sort, then measure.

Read clothing labels, empty pockets and separate lint-shedding towels. Treat stains as directed. Use the labeled detergent dose; choose HE detergent when required.

Group items by compatible care instructions, color and soil level. Check a hidden area before using a stain treatment and inspect remaining stains before drying. Match detergent to the machine and load; extra detergent is not a substitute for the right cycle. Keep room for items to move.

  3. Use energy wisely.

Wash full loads within the machine's capacity. Choose cold water when care labels and cleaning needs allow. Air-dry items when their labels permit.

A full load does not mean a tightly packed drum. Follow the washer's loading guide. Adjust the cycle to the fabric and soil, and do not force delicate or specialty items into an ordinary load. Avoid unnecessary extra rinses; there is no single cold-water setting suitable for every cleaning situation.

  4. Give the dryer a clean start.

Clean the lint filter before and after every load. For vented dryers, keep the duct and outdoor outlet clear. Have restricted or damaged venting serviced.

Never operate a dryer without its lint filter. Check only safely accessible areas; do not climb or pull out a heavy appliance. A vented dryer's duct must not be crushed or restricted, and its outside cover should open during operation. A ventless dryer has a different system: follow its manual instead of looking for an outside exhaust.

  5. Put upkeep on the calendar.

Follow the washer's cleaning schedule. For a ventless dryer, follow its filter and condensate instructions. Save service dates and set reminders from each manual.

There is no universal cleaning recipe or maintenance interval for every machine. Use the cleaner, cycle and parts-care method specified by the manufacturer. Ventless units may collect water in a tank or drain it through a connection; follow your model's directions. Do not rinse or dismantle parts unless the manual directs it.

  6. Put products away safely.

Keep detergent in its original, closed container, out of children's sight and reach. Secure packets and handle them with dry hands. Follow every product label.

Keep laundry products in a secured storage space and never transfer packets to decorative jars or food containers. Children should not handle detergent packets. Close packaging after each use, and keep children and pets away from appliances. Do not mix cleaning products or invent a washer-cleaning recipe.

Before you start

The washer came with the house. Can I use it right away?
Find its manual and check the accessible setup first. If installation, hose condition or drainage is uncertain, have a qualified professional check it before use. Do not assume the seller's previous use proves the installation is correct.
Does every dryer have an outdoor vent?
No. Vented dryers exhaust outdoors; ventless dryers manage moisture differently. Check your model's instructions for filter cleaning, condensate drainage or tank emptying, and other maintenance.
Can I share the flyer in a buyer welcome packet?
Yes. Both language versions are free to download, print and share. The guide includes a clearly identified Wash Bodega service advertisement. No purchase is required.
