Use what you have. Measure detergent. Plan early enough to air-dry when the label allows. This guide is free to print and share.

Ordinary washable clothes only. Garment and product labels take priority. The guide does not promise stain removal or an interview outcome.

Interview clothes, clean and ready on a budget.

Six steps, before interview day

  1. Choose it. Check the label.

Pick your outfit early. Follow each item's washing, drying and ironing instructions. Set dry-clean-only pieces aside.

Try the outfit on before laundry day so you have time to change your plan. If the care label is missing or unclear, ask the maker or a qualified cleaner before washing. A suit jacket and its trousers may need different care from a washable shirt.

  2. Empty pockets. Sort gently.

Separate colors and care needs. Undo shirt buttons, remove collar stays and keep lint-shedding towels away from your outfit.

Do not assume every item in an outfit can share a cycle. Group washable clothes with similar colors, fabric care and soil levels. Check pockets before loading; prepare dress shirts by opening buttons and cuffs and removing removable collar stays.

  3. Treat spots before washing.

Check collars and cuffs. Use a fabric-safe treatment as directed; test a hidden area first. Never mix cleaning products.

Follow the stain product's label for the amount, waiting time and compatible fabrics. Avoid guessing with bleach or home mixtures. Wash after treatment. No method can guarantee removal of an old stain; choose a backup outfit if needed.

  4. Measure. Wash with room.

Use the detergent's labeled dose for your load and washer. Follow the garment's cycle and temperature limits; don't overfill.

More detergent is not a shortcut to cleaner clothes. Match the product to the washer, including HE detergent when required. Keep enough room for items to move. A cold wash is an option only when the garment, product and soil needs allow it.

  5. Check spots. Dry with care.

Look for remaining stains before heat. Re-treat if safe. Follow the drying label and remove clothes promptly to reduce wrinkles.

Heat can set stains. Inspect clothes after washing before using a dryer or iron. Air-dry, dry flat or tumble-dry only as the garment permits. Let clothes dry completely before putting them away.

  6. Finish the night before.

Iron only as the label permits. Check lint, buttons and shoes. Hang the ready outfit and set out your interview essentials.

Use the allowed iron setting and any no-steam restriction. Never iron a garment while wearing it. If you lack suitable equipment, choose a washable outfit that needs less finishing or ask someone you trust for help. Set everything out before the morning rush.
